While the idea of the reading was interesting at first, it unfortunately became very dull and boring for me. The reading discussed the politics behind the Everglades and went through every painstaking detail about the process. Although it is a good thought to bring together nature and politics Grunwald did not accomplish writing a good article. I am not exactly a huge political fan so I would assume that has played a big part in my dislike for this reading. Due to the fact that this article was more of a political history lesson than a story I found if EXTREMELY difficult to find quotes that discuss my feelings because everything is so factual and this leaves me very little room to discuss so I will give my BEST effort to make a good blog out of this. On the plus side I would recommend Grunwald’s writing to anyone who has trouble sleeping because this will put anyone out!

A Time to Act (Grunwald 78)
Discussing the 2000 Everglades Coalition conference this part of the reading discussed the conference in which activists attempted to have a restoration project passed. It was believed that the decisions that were made at this particular conference would be the deciding factor on the restoration of the Everglades for decades to come. From what I gathered they were protesting against the construction of an airport and an everglades restoration on top of that but in the end it was deemed that the airports construction would not hinder the restoration of the Everglades so both the airport construction and the restoration project were passed.

“Consensus Was the Only Way to Do This” (Grunwald 84)
This section followed up on the first and quickly began stating that the restoration project wasn’t going along as promised. The government wasn’t giving the restorers everything they were guaranteed so this forced them to get together and once again fight to get support for the everglades restoration.  At the end of the read almost everyone eventually agreed to a CERP plan.

The Everglades Is Coming (Grunwald 91)
In the final part of the read it was all up to Congress to approve of the newfound plan. Slowly passing through different branches of government it finally made it to the House of Representatives and the mission’s future was in its hands. In the end the airport was rejected and the plan went through. Grunwald closes by mentioning that it’s not always about money but peoples care for the environment which I thought was a good piece to add.

At the end of the day this read covered an extremely important part of history that every Florida native should be aware of. Unfortunately Grunwald made this read very slow and boring and could’ve done a much better job. Making it less wordy and emphasizing the relationship between politics and nature would’ve made this read a 10/10.
